General Membership
SURJ NYC has an official membership structure! This structure allows everyone who wants to make a sustained commitment to SURJ NYC a clear way to do so. It articulates shared agreements for all members, and clarifies how SURJ NYC supports its members in their anti-racist work and beyond.
SURJ NYC members make the following commitments to their anti-racist practice:
Move money: Make at least one generous-for-you donation to people-of-color-led organizing each year.
Move self: Engage in study and self-reflection to deepen your understanding of how white supremacy operates and how to dismantle it.
Move community: Participate in calling in the white people in your networks.
Move power: Take concrete action designed to effect change on the material reality of white supremacy in NYC. (Go to a rally, call your representative, participate in a direct action, etc.)
Move into relationship: Build relationships with other people in SURJ NYC. Seek out people to learn from, process with, and give and take feedback with.
SURJ NYC members also agree to make a donation of as little as one dollar per year to SURJ NYC to help collectively fund our work and the work of the organizations and campaigns we organize with.
SURJ NYC members are encouraged to participate in setting the direction and structure of SURJ NYC by participating in our consensus-building decision-making process which happens at selected chapter meetings.
To support members in meeting these commitments, SURJ NYC provides regular offerings of political education, calling-in workshops, action opportunities with groups and campaigns we organize with, and social gatherings. All members are invited to join an email list where these opportunities are shared and where members can communicate directly with other members. This is a new space and separate from our weekly newsletter, which will continue to go out to our full email list every Tuesday.
CHAPTER MEETINGS
SURJ NYC chapter meetings are open to all. We hold monthly chapter meetings on the first Thursday of each month from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm — check our event calendar for registration details.
