Zohran’s incredible win last week is still energizing us today!
Thank you to everyone who joined SURJ NYC to canvass in Southern Brooklyn! Together we knocked on nearly 1,700 doors and had hundreds of meaningful conversations. At the polls on Tuesday, so many people thanked us for being there to show support for Zohran because they never see canvassers for left or Democratic candidates in their neighborhood. We were also thrilled to connect with a number of Russian speaking canvassers who had rich conversations including this one at the polls in Brighton Beach:
“I had one really moving convo with an older Russian speaking man who said he didn’t trust me at first, but came back to talk, and then ultimately ended up saying that he never thought he would meet someone with views similar to his and was so glad that we met!”
Zohran’s win shows what we can do when people across the city come together to fight for the New York we want to live in. This work is not over! If you were energized by this campaign, make a plan for how you will channel that energy going forward. Below you will find many opportunities to get involved in the ongoing work of SURJ NYC on topics including immigration, policing, incarceration, and Indigenous Solidarity. Two additional immediate ways to get started:
If you enjoyed getting out to talk to your neighbors, there are more opportunities to reach out to discuss important issues in our city and state. Our partners at Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP) are putting together canvasses in neighborhoods where they want to put pressure on our state representatives to cosponsor legislation to free our elders from prison. Fill out this form to let them know your general availability to go out tabling in the coming months - there are lots of neighborhoods to cover!
If you are looking for ways to get involved in fighting back against ICE’s ongoing and potentially escalating attack on NYC, check out this starter pack of resources that our Immigration Justice group shared at last week’s chapter meeting! To dive deeper, including getting connected to courtwatch and ICE watch trainings and neighborhood-based response groups, join the next Immigration Justice working group meeting on Tuesday, November 25th from 6:30–8:30pm.
Onward,
SURJ NYC
P.S. SURJ NYC is turning 10 years old in December! Stay tuned for more info on a reflective & celebratory event!
