Voting is a Racial Justice Issue

A full moon with Samhain, Dia de los Muertos approaching, Serbia and Brazil had elections with victories for politicians who will fight authoritarianism and fascism. Elections in the USA are next, let's do the same! Here are four things to do:

  1. VOTE: In NYC, early voting has begun. Find your polling place and vote early!

There are 5 proposals to change the city charter, with no clear right and wrong answers. You can read reports on the proposals here, here, and here, and see statements submitted for and against the proposals by various community groups here.

Vote on the WFP line so they maintain their ballot line and have more leverage to push elected officials and Democratic candidates.

  2. WIN the election. Phone bank with SURJ National to block MAGA and send progressive champions to Congress! The stage for the midterm elections is set, and the stakes for our movement and democracy couldn't be higher. Time is still available to make calls to elect progressives. If you’re new to phone banking with SURJ, register here. If you’re returning, register here.

  3. FIND COMMUNITY: On Election night, SURJ National will host an election night watch session on zoom, look for the link in next week's newsletter.

Then, join us at SURJ NYC’s Chapter Meeting on Thursday, November 5 to check in and get ready for what's next, hear updates on what's happening around the country, and learn about what actions we're taking together in NYC.

  4. ENFORCE the results and uphold democracy. Trump and MAGA know they won't win the midterm elections fair and square, so they're trying to keep people from voting and votes from being counted. It's our job to show up and call out any attempts to sabotage the election. If there is interference at the polls, tampering with ballots, or threats to certification of results, we'll jump into action in coordination with other groups across the country. These actions could take place anytime from Election Day until Congress is seated on January 3rd, 2026. Are you with us? Sign up here to get more information and calls to action!

In solidarity,

SURJ NYC
